Instant knockout is one of the newest supplements out there so we just had to take a look at how it works to see if it was legit or not. At first glance, it just seems like any other supplement website with it’s ripped fighter guy in the background and a bunch of claims that say it can melt away your fat with no effort at all.
On second glance, you start to notice things that go along with what we teach here at Supplement Reality. First of all, they know the difference between a fat burner and an appetite suppressant (my article on the difference!). This is still at a skeptical stage since most companies claim to do both, and it’s hard to do without the right ingredients. Just as a recap let’s go over the difference between an appetite suppressant and a fat burner.
How Does An Appetite Suppressant Work?
An appetite suppressant works by convincing your body it’s full. This works through either chemical or mechanical processes to convince the body of satiation. On the chemical side, appetite suppressants can either lower gastric acid levels (Stomach acid) or it can increase adrenaline levels. Doing either of these things will lead to a person feeling full faster without eating extra calories.
The mechanical portion works through the appetite suppressants ability to increase food volume. Usually something like fiber or an expanding ingredient works well. In mechanical methods, the fiber is eaten and fill up the stomach, but since it’s indigestible it adds no calories. Some sugars can also attach to water and solidify to make you feel fuller.
How Does A Fat Burner Work?
A fat burner works differently in that it doesn’t have an effect on how many calories you want to eat. Instead it works by increasing your thermogenic temperature enough that it burns a few extra calories.
Usually it has a beneficial side effect of making your more alert as well, since they increase the epinephrine levels in your body as well. Let’s get back to Instant Knockout and see how it fares against science.
What they claim:
They have a wide variety of claims. Their first claim is that they can help increase your fat burning abilities at home. They base this off the fact that you burn energy working out or watching T.V.. This product will help increase your metabolism. Their second claim is that is that it will help suppress your appetite. The last and third claim is that this product has the ability to increase your energy levels throughout the day.
This is important because when you are eating less calories each day, it ends up affecting your ability to concentrate and feel good each day.
Let’s go over the claims and see if they can back it up scientifically.
Instant Knockout Ingredients
Vitamin B6: The Vitamin B complexes are regularly used in supplements that are made to give people a boost of energy. These have also been shown to increase your metabolism in a small way.
Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 has similar effects to the Vitamin B6 above. The difference is that B12 also helps with your ability to turn fatty acids into glucose. This process also allows protein synthesis to increase.
Zinc: This is what started the myth that ZMA increased testosterone production a ton. Zinc doesn’t have that effect, but it is responsible for a person’s ability to moderate and maintain testosterone levels. Most people are lacking zinc, and for this reason it’s a great mineral to include in a appetite suppressing fat burner.
GTF Chromium: Chromium is a trace element found in your body. Most people see improved insulin levels with a chromium supplement. Overall, this isn’t the best ingredient in a fat burning supplement. But it can’t hurt either.
Green tea extract: Green tea extract as a compound called EGCG. EGCG has been shown to help improve fat loss in low calorie diets. Most trials showed that it’s most effective results came from a range of 300-600mg of green tea extract. With a dosage of 500mg, this is well within the limits.
Green Coffee Extract: Another ingredient that has been shown to help with fat loss. They even cite a study that shows it was effective at around 400 mg. I found a study that used 500mg so it should be around there. The problem is that they didn’t use either of these, and instead used 180mg. This is almost comical after they cited a study using 400 mg.
Cayenne Powder: Cayenne powder isn’t much of a fat burner, but more of an appetite suppressant. This works because capsaicin has been shown to increase your thermogenic levels, as well as make you eat less. It may be because you eat slower while eating spicy foods, or it may be down to capsaicin levels affecting gastric acid. Either way this is a good ingredient to have in an appetite suppressant.
Glucomannan: Glucomannan is a sugar that is extracted from the Konjac plant. This is an appetite suppressant that works by increasing the amount of fiber in your stomach. It is thought to absorb water and then to thicken up that ends up creating the effect of feeling full.
Caffeine Anhydrous: This is of course an ingredient that can be found in almost every fat burner and appetite suppressant there is. This is because caffeine is effective. Instant knockout also has a lot of it at 300mg. Be careful with the dosing because this is certainly a lot of caffeine. Caffeine, also found in coffee, has been shown to decrease appetite and increase energy levels.
Black Pepper Extract: Generally best used for it’s ability to make all the other ingredients Bio-available. This means that your body has a better chance of absorbing all the above mentioned ingredients. Without this, the chances of your body absorbing it lower, which would basically decrease the effectiveness of the whole entire Instant Knockout supplement.
Final Review Of Instant Knockout!
Out of the 10 ingredients, there were some that didn’t seem to have much potential. The others were proven ingredients that can help anyone lose weight at the right dosage with the right diet. The appetite suppressant part of Instant Knockout is strong from the inclusion of capsaicin, caffeine, and glucomannan. The fat burning has potential with green tea extract, and green coffee bean extract (although not enough CGE). If you include this within a solid diet with a caloric deficit you can expect great fat loss goals.
